A little about the Saint

Moinuddin Chishti, also known as Gharib Nawaz, was an Imam, Islamic scholar and philosopher from South Asia. Lots of Mughal emperors were followers of this notable Sufi saint. Thought to be a direct descendant of Muhammad, Chishti did a lot where Sufism is concerned. It is believed that Chishti came to India following a dream in which Muhammad told him to do so. Chishti was also instrumental in promoting harmony between Muslims and non-Muslims. Such was this blessed saint who upheld a greater meaning of God, peace and brotherhood.

The shrine as it is

The main gate to the shrine is known as the Nizam gate, followed by the Shahjahani gate which was erected by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Then, it is followed by the Buland Darwaza upon which is hoisted the Urs flag which signifies the beginning of the death anniversary rituals. The Urs of Moinuddin Chishti is celebrated every year on the 6th and 7th of the seventh month of the Islamic calendar. The best parts about the Urs are the Qalandars of Mehrauli who walk all the way to Ajmer from Delhi every year. They offer beautiful colourful quilts sewn out of gold and silver threads.

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is an important place of worship for every follower of Islam. Have you ever visited this spectacular Dargah? Share your experiences in the comments section!
