Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is a pristine white basilica in Panaji, the capital of Goa. Along with being one of the most beautiful churches in India, it is also one of the most important religious destinations for Catholics in India. Built over a stack of zigzagging stairs, this church is a known landmark in Panaji and was once the first port of call for sailors from Lisbon. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church was built in 1619 over an older 1540 chapel that was built by the Portuguese. With a long-standing colonial history, this church flaunts an old-world Baroque style of architecture that is quite pleasing to the eyes. If you plan to visit this church any time soon, book one of the lovely hotels in Goa that is located near this church for travel convenience.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, aka Panaji Church, holds mass every day in English, Konkani and Portuguese. The interiors of the church are simple but beatific, with the background to the main altar of Mary Immaculate being quite striking and impressive. The two altars flanking this altar are what makes this church remarkable, with one altar dedicated to Jesus and the other to Our Lady of the Rosary.

The gilded, intricately carved ornamentation is what will catch your eye as you step inside this gorgeous space. The resonating quiet and serenity, while a part of most churches, is felt even more inside this glorious shrine. Panaji Church is quite a sight in the evenings and during fests when it is illuminated by bright lights. The Feast of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is also held with great pomp and show on 8th December at Panaji Church.
