Shillong is a prominent city and capital of the north east state of India, Meghalaya. Being the political capital of the state, this city holds a prominence in this part of the country. Apart from being an important political city, Shillong is also a traveler’s paradise.

Shillong is rich in natural and wildlife resources and undoubtedly is one of the many important tourist destinations in India. The naturally blessed mountain city is decorated with wonderful waterfalls, thick pine tree forests, beautiful gardens and sky kissing peaks. The city has been nicknamed as the ‘Mini Scotland’ or ‘Scotland of the East’. Shillong being the best among the north east beauties attracts a significant amount of attendance from around the world.

Following are some of the most famous tourist attractions in Shillong:

Ward’s Lake: Undoubtedly the best place for a picnic or a hangout, this 100 years old shoe shaped lake is one of the most visited tourist destination in the city. One can enjoy boating while feeding the fishes of this beautiful lake. The arched bridge, green lawns and the nearby botanical garden makes this destination a must visit for tourists.

Shillong Peak: The Shillong peak is located at about 6445 ft. above the sea level and is also a very famous picnic spot for families and groups. The location offers a panoramic view of the majestic Himalayas and of the natural splendors surrounding the area.

Elephant Falls:  The gigantic Elephant waterfall does justice to its name. The lofty treasure of Shillong is some 10 kms away from the city.  The clean water thundering down the green rocks through the mountains is an astounding sight which should not be missed.

Lady Hydari Park: This wonderful park is named after the wife of the Ex Governor of the state of Meghalaya. Showcasing rich Japanese garden beauty, the park has an infamous collection of flowers on offer. The park also has a small in-house zoo with innate creatures, particular to this region.

The best time to visit Shillong is in between October and April. The destination has many budget and luxury hotels. The proximity to the hills makes Shillong a perfect hill station for people looking for a pleasant break from their hectic schedules. It is not easy to book hotels in Shillong  during on seasons, so it is advisable to plan your vacation in advance.
