The rush has already begun. The 2016 Durga Puja festival is now just a few days away and one can sense the festive mood amongst the Bengalis across India (and especially Kolkata). This is the time when Kolkata comes alive with vibrant colours, sparkling lights and more than thousand thematic and colourful pandals. Each year, the puja organisers come up with the most unique and elaborate pandal themes to attract the visitors. While some of the pandals are designed based on the traditional theme, others are more contemporary. Here are 10 Durga Puja pandals that will adorn the Kolkata festive landscape this year.

1. Bagbazar Durga Puja

It is one of the oldest Durga Puja pandals in kolkata, and has been around for more than 100 years. It is a relatively simple pandal which emphasises on traditional and culture celebrations.

2. Kumartuli Park Durga Puja:

Celebrating its 24th year in 2016, Kumartuli Park pandal is the youngest pandal in Kolkata. To preserve the social and cultural milieu, the pandal committee sets it up in an area which is home to hundreds of artisans i.e. Kumortuli.

3. College Square Durga Puja

Sitting amid the picturesque setting of the lake of College Square, this pandal is famous for its lighting and decoration. The ideal time to visit the pandal is in the evening when its vibrant lights illuminate the entire area and the glint of light can be seen on the water of lake.

4. Suruchi Sangha Puja Pandal:

Suruchi Sangha has been organizing Durga Puja from last 56 years, and every year it exhibits the best of different Indian states as its theme. It also entertains visitors with an amazing outdoor display.

Where: Block M, New Alipore, Kolkata

5. Ekdalia Evergreen Durga Puja Pandal

It is an elaborate pandal with its theme based on recreating famous temples around the country. The best time to visit this Durga Puja pandal is at night.

6. Bosepukur Sitala Mandir Puja Puja

It is one of the most famous Durga Puja pandals in kolkata. Known for its unique decoration themes, this pandal more often than not depicts the rural Bengal through its art and Durga idol.

7. Jodhpur Park Durga Puja

With a vast and varied pandal theme, Jodhpur Park never fails to amaze its visitors. Every year, the theme varies from quirky to traditional. This year it’s going to be a surprise for all the devotees.

Where: Near Jadavpur Police Station, just off Gariahat Road (South)

8. Badamtala Ashar Sangha

With a heritage of over 75 years, this pandal holds a special place in people’s heart. Badamtala Ashar Sangha has won several awards for its outstanding themes. The remarkable break was in the year 2010 when it won the creative excellence award from Asian paints.

9. Naktala Udayan Sangha

Demonstrating the impossibility in simplicity, this pandal showcases its innovation and creativity through its distinct pandal architecture. Every year, the organizers bring up an indifferent form of goddess Durga idol to attract visitors.

Where: Sahid Nagar Colony, Netaji Nagar, Kolkata

10. Mohammad Ali Park Durga Puja

Situated in the centre of a huge park, this pandal recreates replicas of monuments from all over the world. The craftsmen keen eye to detail reflect through their artistic work. Since the pandal has won several awards in different categories, it isconsidered as one of the prestigious places for Durga Puja in Kolkata.

Where: Chittaranjan Ave, Calcutta University, College Square, Kolkata
